So right off the bat, CodeRabbit is cheaper. For a team of 10 devs, you're looking at $240/month on CodeRabbit Pro versus $300/month on Greptile (assuming you stay under 50 reviews per dev, which... most teams won't). That gap widens fast with heavy PR volume.
How They Actually Work
Here's where things get interesting.
CodeRabbit is PR-scoped. It looks at the diff, understands what changed, and gives you feedback on that specific change. It's fast — comments usually show up within a couple minutes of opening a PR. Where Greptile Wins
If you're working on a large, complex codebase — think microservices, shared libraries, stuff where changing one thing can break something three repos away — Greptile's full-codebase awareness is genuinely valuable. It catches the kind of bugs that only show up when you understand how systems connect.
The self-hosting option matters for enterprises that can't send code to third-party servers. CodeRabbit doesn't offer this. If your security team has opinions about where your code goes (and they should), this could be the deciding factor regardless of anything else.
Greptile also has an API you can build on. Want to wire up custom review rules, integrate with your internal tooling, or build something weird? Greptile lets you. CodeRabbit is more of a closed system.
And when Greptile catches something big — a subtle concurrency bug, a security issue buried in a dependency chain — it really earns its keep. Those moments don't happen every day, but when they do, they can save you weeks of debugging.
The Setup Experience
CodeRabbit: click, click, done. I had it reviewing PRs within 5 minutes of signing up. Not exaggerating.
Greptile: you need to let it index your codebase first, which can take anywhere from minutes to hours depending on repo size. On a monorepo with 500k+ lines, the initial indexing took almost two hours. After that it's fine, but the first-run experience is noticeably slower.
